Suggested Storage Tips & Best Practices

Disclaimer: These storage tips are provided for informational purposes only. Storage conditions may vary, and renters store items at their own risk. Please use your best judgment when implementing these recommendations.

Storage Protection Categories

Moisture Protection

  • Storage spaces are not completely waterproof – use plastic bins and pallets for valuable items
  • Never cover cement floors with tarps, plastic bags, rugs or blankets – cement needs to ‘breathe’
  • Remove snow from front and around door to prevent water infiltration
  • Place moisture absorbents and deodorizers in your storage space

Proper Door Management

  • Always tuck door handle/rope completely inside storage space when closing
  • Tenant is responsible for replacing damaged handles/ropes from weather exposure

Container & Box Selection

  • Plastic tub containers with tight-fitting lids are ideal – they stack easily
  • Avoid cardboard boxes, when possible, but if used: large boxes for light items, small boxes for heavy items
  • Never place boxes directly on the floor – use pallets or shelving
  • Keep packed boxes under 40 pounds for safe lifting
  • Fill containers to capacity to prevent tipping or collapse

Packing & Organization

  • Place heavier items on bottom, lighter items on top – mark boxes ‘this side up’
  • Keep valuable items in the rear of the space for privacy
  • Stack boxes with labels visible for easy identification
  • Leave a walkway down the center for easy access
  • Use full height of space with proper shelving

Furniture & Large Item Protection

  • Protect furniture and mattresses with covers designed for them
  • Spray wood furniture with quality furniture spray before storing
  • Store mattresses and upholstered furniture on the long end, raised on pallets
  • Don’t lean furniture against outside walls
  • Break down furniture with removable legs or parts to save space
  • Stack chairs seat-to-seat with towels or blankets between them

Special Items

  • Hang clothing in wardrobe boxes to prevent wrinkling
  • Wrap mirrors and pictures with paper pads – never store flat
  • Wipe metal objects and tools with oil to prevent rust
  • Treat leather items with conditioner before storage
  • Don’t store vacuum cleaners with bags inside
  • Drain gas tanks from lawnmowers and leaf blowers before storage

Space Optimization & Organization

Organization & Planning

  • Make an inventory list of stored items and their locations
  • Keep frequently used items in the front of the space
  • Fill hollow furniture (wardrobes, drawers) with smaller items
  • Use appliances to store linens, books, or CDs/DVDs
  • Wedge appliance doors open for air circulation
  • Estimate replacement values for insurance purposes

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don’t use printed newspaper for wrapping – ink may smudge
  • Don’t use plastic to cover belongings – retains moisture
  • Don’t store brushes resting on bristles
  • Don’t pack boxes so tight that there’s no air circulation
  • Don’t forget to place vermin bait as a precaution
